If EcoSpeed could tech drivers better manners, it might be just about perfect

Still insist on using that gas-guzzling holdover from the 20th century, the automobiles? Well, I have a little something for you, you naughty boy, and it will save you a little cash as well as protecting the environment you so callously defile with your every trip. It's called EcoSpeed, and it's pretty clever.

EcoSpeed consists of two ideas. The first is to give you a route (plotted on Google Maps) which is naturally more efficient in terms of burning fuel, avoiding traffic stops but perhaps making your journey a little longer (but not necessarily slower) if it means better mileage.

The second part kicks in when you're driving (various phones apps are in the making). You know how you blow past that cyclist, your blind rage forcing you to pass him even though you know there's a red light not 50 yards hence? Not only is it dangerous, it also burns a ton of extra gas. EcoSpeed guides you to drive at an optimal speed and can save you up to 30% of your fuel bills as you thrill to its turn-by turns directions.

Not bad for an app, right?

EcoSpeed comes from Clarian Labs, and the folks behind it plan to have free androids and iphoness versions available in time for SXSW (or "South By," as the hipsters say) in March. In the meantime, you can view a demo of the mapping part. And if you can manage to drive with a lighter right foot, then this alone could save you money.
