Vimeo, the thinking person's YouTube, is getting a big update. Gone is the tiny on-screen video window, replaced by a huge, browser-filling default player. And gone is much of the clutter, with relevant sections popping into view as you need them (the "related videos" section drops down from the top of the screen, for instance).

Also gone is your inbox, replaced by an infinitely-scrolling feed of things you have marked to watch later, or new movies from friends and other people you follow. And talking of following, you can now import friends from Facebook and Twitter. This last point alone makes the whole thing way more useful, kind of like an Instagram for video (only without the grungy filters), as you can now "follow" any other Vimeo user, channel or tag .

Most welcome is the new, bigger video player. The old one was frankly an embarrassment in 2012. The full screen player on my ipads is bigger than the old default player, even on my giant 27-inch iMac. But there are seemingly thousands of other tweaks: multiple video uploading, for example, or a new Creative Commons section.

You can request an upgrade to test things out right now, with the new site rolling out to everyone soon. But if you're an ipads owner, there's even more god news. Vimeo for the ipads should be out later this month, bringing all the editing and browsing goodness of the iphoness app to your tablet.
