When it comes to my children and technology, I’m a little picky. After being in a marching band for eight years (and sitting near the drum section) I am also picky when it comes to not only what my kids listen to but how loud they listen to it.
The iFrogz Animatone earbuds and headphoness are a bright, fun product that come in several animal themes. While the kids are drawn to the shiny primary colors, I, as a parent, am drawn to the volume limiting technology. I had the opportunity to try out sets of both the earbuds and the headphoness with my three-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter.
The Headphoness: The first time my daughter tried on the headphoness, she complained they were too tight. After her brother used them about a half dozen times, they were more or less “broken in” and were much more comfortable to my daughter. My daughter listens to primarily audio books. While using the headphoness, we both found the audio was just as clear on the headphoness than on the hand-me-down computer speakers I have had for over ten years.
My son asks for the headphoness when he plays on our Kindle. After testing the volume limiting, I was happy to find that even if I leave the volume all of the way up on the Kindle, the headphoness cut it down to a reasonable volume for him to listen to, unlike my headphoness which will blare out the next YouTube video if I don’t adjust the volume first. Overall, I am very happy with the product. We have had them for just about two months, and they still look brand new and don’t have any connection shorts after rugged use.
Earbuds: My son really likes the earbuds. He played with them to begin with because he is not accustomed to having something in his ears. The shape of the earbuds reminds me of the first earbuds that came with ipodss because they have a long plastic enclosure that goes to the wire. To me, it isn’t quite as comfortable as newer styles of earbuds that fit almost entirely in the ear, but they aren't horrible. They are definitely made to work with a child’s ears, and are easy for little fingers to put in and take out. Again, the volume limiting was to the same level as the headphoness. I am very pleased.
The only problem we had with the earbuds was the size. The nubs come in four sizes: extra small, small, medium, and large. Some regular adult headphoness come with the same four sizes. I had hoped that the extra small size would fit my daughter’s ears. I was wrong. She has my tiny ears and is cursed to never be able to use earbuds (let’s just say I have to use the small nubs and can get away with the extra small ones).
Overall we are happy with the iFrogz Animatone products. You can find them for $25 for the headphoness and $20 for the earbuds through the iFrogz website.
