(leaves rustling)

[Voice-over] The shrike is, by far,

the most metal of birds.

Just look at it.

Gimme me some metal, guys.

(loud fast metal music)

(raises voice) The shrike is so awesomely metal

because it has to be.

(music volume lowers) Thank you.

The shrike is so awesomely metal because it has to be.

It may look like a chickadee, but it has

the bloodlust of an eagle.

(fast metal music)

It kills lizards, mice and other birds

with pecks to the skull and neck.

But it doesn't have the powerful talons of an eagle,

so it can't hold on to its prey

and rip it up at the same time.

So the shrike picks up its victim, yep, that'd be a victim,

and impales it on the nearest spiky object.

This can be a thorn, like you see here,

or a garden fork, or most metal of all, barbed wire.

With the prey immobilized, the bird can tear

through flesh using its sharp beak.

Even more sinister, the shrike will build

collections of impales victims.

The bird will even kill if it isn't hungry

then return to shish-kabob prey weeks later

when its little tummy is empty.

So metal. (metal music gets louder)

(raised voice) All right, fine, you win.

I was done anyway.

(loud metal music)
