Smash Testing a GoPro
Released on 04/09/2015
(techno music)
Last season, we had a lot of fun
battle testing a GoPro camera without its case,
aka naked, and some of you weren't so happy about that.
You all wanted us to put the GoPro's clothes back on,
because you folks are real class acts.
So now we're gonna pit a fully clothed GoPro
against two of its biggest competitors,
to see which action cam is truly the toughest.
(fast-paced techno music)
GoPro currently dominates the action cam market.
But now Sony and Contour are trying to
get in on the action with some competitive cheaper cameras.
They may do well under water,
but let's see how these cams stack up
against cold hard gravity.
(crashes)
All right, action cams.
These things are meant to take some damage.
Roll.
Action.
(slow dramatic wind)
(clanking)
(clanking)

(clanking)
Did that one splatter the case?
I think it did.
Now check to see which ones are still recording after that.
The Contour, not recording. (buzz)
Sony, also not looking good. (buzz)
GoPro, still recording.
All right, well let's check the cards,
to see if the footage actually works.
Brian, our D.I.T.
Hello. You checked the cards,
you have the results of these cameras.
I do. What's the results?
For the Contour and the action cam,
the files from the actual impact
seemed corrupted, couldn't play that.
Wow! These are out (laughs).
So sad, 15 feet.
It's not even that hard of an impact,
when they're encased.
With the GoPro, the file from the drop did play.
There was some stuttering,
but I don't know if that's from the GoPro itself,
or just the computer having trouble with playback.
You would think they're action cams, right?
I'm disappointed.
It didn't take a lot of action.
I guess there's a reason GoPro's number one.
(cheering) (crash)
Here on Battle of the Image,
just because a product wins,
doesn't mean we're done with it,
which is why I'm about to spike this GoPro like a football.
I believe you, Justin.
Speed.
Action.
(clanks)
(clanks)
(clanks)
How's it look?
Is it still recording?
No, it's not.
(Justin laughs) The light's on,
it says 49, (beeps)
stuck on a number,
I know, frozen on the back too.
Wow, this shot This is that moment.
is so cool.
It's the steel plate, and it's like melted.
I've never seen this in a GoPro.
You've never spiked your GoPro,
and seen this?
I don't know if this footage is still gonna work.
That's the real question.
(dramatic sad music)
(crash)
Okay,
it's Shame Safe Time.
It's Shame Time.
Roll.
Action.
(slow dramatic music)
(crash)
(crash)
(crash)

I think that's good. Let's get a
break dancing move.
Take a look at the bottom of that safe.
Oh yeah, that thing did a spin.
Oh my gosh, look at this.
I think the Contour took like the brunt of it,
'cause he's taller.
That's what you get.
That's what you get for being tall, bro.
So this thing's definitely broken,
but, you know, it put up a fight.
Well, looks like the GoPro is the toughest,
but what do you think of our result?
Let us know down there in the comments.
Was that cruel of us to make our cameras
film other cameras being destroyed?
No, Justin, cameras don't feel feelings.
You're right.
