Alfonso and Jonás Cuarón on “Gravity”

Like father, like son. Alfonso Cuarón talks about working with son Jonás on Gravity, his new film starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. The Y Tu Mamá También and Children of Men director also explains how he achieved the realistic CGI of outer space with the help of some robots and brand-new technology.

[Matt] Explorer's been hit.

Explorer, do you read?

I'm here with Jonás and Alfonso Cuarón.

And, of course, you are Alfonso's son.

Yeah. How was it working together?

Father and son?

I think since we understand each other,

after 30 years living together,

I think it made things in many ways easier.

I ended up learning more from Jonás

then I think the film shows it.

It's just a new approach, a fresh approach to see things.

So tell me a little bit about the story.

I guess the idea of the film was to create a movie where

the experience went back to something very primal.

Space also was a great setting for this movie

because it's so far away from earth.

So in many ways it's terrifying.

Once you're up there, anything goes wrong,

and you're in big trouble.

[Matt] You need to detach! I can't see you anymore!

Do it now!

I'm trying! I'm trying! (screams)

[Matt] Houston, I've lost visual of Dr. Stone.

[Alfonso] To make this film,

it took us 4 and a half years.

The fickle thing here is the integration between animation

and live action and CG lighting.

The whole thing takes place in CG.

So our characters are not only floating,

but just rolling and spinning.

It proved to be impossible to do it with wires,

because you would just, wires are very limiting

And, also, you can see the strain on the actors.

And we tried different things, we tried the vomit comet,

that is called parabolic flight.

And you're limited by the size of the plane inside.

So, we needed to invent our own technology.

We adapted those robots that they build cars with

to have cameras and lights. Wire machines.

But that they were pre-programed combined with LEDs.

There was not one single technology up there,

because each moment required different technology.

From the moment you are watching the movie,

you are at the edge of your seat,

you're part of the character's experience.

(fast heartbeat and breathing)

It's so cool that we've seen members of the audience

watching the film, and struggling to breathe.

It's very immersive, that's the cool thing of the film.

(heavy breathing)

(dramatic instrumental music)

[Matt] Give me five!
