Aubrey Plaza, Maggie Carey, and Alia Shawkat Share Their “To Do List”
Released on 11/19/2013
(piano tune)
Please welcome to the stage, President of Mathletes,
as well as our own self-published magazine:
Women with a Why, valedictorian Brandy Klark.
(scattered applause)
Get off the stage, virgin!
(laughter)
I loved high school.
I think I'm in the minority.
I'm still really-- I loved it too.
You did?
Yeah, I loved it.
(groovy beat music)
My name's Alia Shawkat.
I play Fiona in the film The To Do List.
I'm proud of it; it's a funny, raunchy comedy.
Wait, you just--
Okay, that's who I am, sorry!
(giggling) Aubrey?
Who are you?
Great job.
My name's Aubrey Plaza, I'm gonna go again.
and I play Brandy Klark
[Alia] Oh, they you are. in the movie.
[Alia] She goin from straight A's to getting her first F.
That's right.
I think it's sexy.
(laughter) But in a really un-sexy way.
[Maggie] Yep. Well said.
And I'm Maggie Carey.
I wrote and directed the movie.
And I do pride myself; they are some of the most un-sexy
sex scenes ever directed, so I nailed that one.
Is this-- is it-- are-- is this shorts or a skirt?
Neither, they're skorts.
(laughter) She gave me her
high school diaries and they were helpful.
They gave me a lot of inspiration.
You just had an attitude and you were super confident.
Like, it was very, it was written from a person that
really knew everything and was very confident.
Which knew everything with no life experience.
Right.
But knew you know, everything.
Which is like, you know, most teenagers.
Yeah.
(groovy funk music)
We met at UCB Theater One, Two, Three.
in New York.
Yeah, a long time ago we were in an improv class together
and we were friends.
Yep. And then Maggie
asked me to be in a web series that
she directed at the time that I was in
also with her husband Bill Hader and some other people.
And that's kinda how we met.
[Maggie] Yeah and I wrote the movie with Aubrey in mind.
That's why it's sexy.
(laughter) C'mon now.
Sorry, I'm too classic.
You know seeing her do stuff at UCB and seeing her
improvise shows, she'll play like six different
characters in a night
and I love, I mean she definitely is amazing at
sarcastic and dead-pan;
but it was fun to also see her do something more
type A and very studious.
It's not having sex that's a big deal, it's this.
Work-Out.
All those feelings and emotional crap.
Go see the movie, okay?
(laughter) That's why we're here.
That's enough. You're gonna love the movie.
You did it. You're good. Go see it.
(laughter)
Put your glasses on.
I will when I'm ready.
(swishing bell)
(cracking whip)
